Anthropogenic noise pollution also has significant implications for marine biodiversity besides chemical runoff or solid waste disposal. There is a sharp increase in significant levels of anthropogenic noise from shipping, oil & gas exploration, sonar, seismic testing, hydroelectric power, recreational motor vehicles and other activities. The significant adverse impacts are masking, behavioral disturbance and physiological changes, physical injury and mortality. Important physiological changes are hearing loss, discomfort, injury, brain damage, beached whales and dolphins, jumbled communications, animals get lost and deserted environments. When received sound pressure levels are close to the source, the intense sounds can lead to death.
Anthropogenic sound in the marine environment is an issue that is likely to increase in significance over the next few decades, which could have both short- and long-term negative consequences for costal and marine ecosystems. Implementations of new solutions for decreasing noise pollution in the oceans of the world are crucial to the biodiversity of marine life.
