Talk Title: Listening to the Ocean: Science, Policy, and Global Marine Biodiversity Challenges

Ricardo Serrão Santos is an ocean scientist and politician. He holds a PhD in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Liverpool. He is an Honorary Fellow of the OKEANOS Institute at the University of the Azores, where he also served as Dean and Director. His research focuses on biodiversity, conservation, and the management of ocean ecosystems. He has authored more than 250 publications (at Web of Science h-index: 52) and was a member of the Executive Planning Group supporting the development of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, serving on several other international panels. He is a member of the Comité Éthique en Commun (IFREMER, IRD, CIRAD, INRAE), Paris, and is co-chair of the IPOS Scientific Committee for the Global Deep-Sea Consultation. He was a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019 and served as Portugal’s Minister of the Sea from 2019 to 2022. He is a Full Member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences, an Emeritus Member of the Portuguese Navy Academy, and a Fellow of the Portuguese Geographical Society.
