María C. Uyarra is a principal researcher at AZTI (Spain), working at the interface of marine biodiversity, ecosystem services, environmental management and society. She holds a BSc in Biology (Universidad de Navarra, Spain), an MSc in Applied Ecology and Conservation, and a PhD in tourism management for coral reef conservation (University of East Anglia, UK). She has more than 20 years’ experience in interdisciplinary marine research. Since joining AZTI in 2011, she has contributed to and coordinated European projects addressing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, ecosystem-based management, marine ecosystem services, recreational uses, marine litter, aquaculture, renewable energies and ocean literacy. She currently manages GES4SEAS project. Much of her work focuses on connecting ocean research with policy and practice through stakeholder engagement, co-creation and science communication. She is a member of the EuroGOOS Ocean Literacy Working Group and the REEDUCAMAR platform, leads ocean literacy actions in EU-funded projects and has authored more than 60 scientific publications, books and book chapters (Scopus H-index 30).
